Trustworthy AI in CCAM
The European Union has produced work to guide the development of the region's automobile industry, including work on automated vehicles.
Competitiveness and Sustainable Growth of the Automotive Industry in the European Union
The European Commission established the High- Level Group (HLG) GEAR 2030, in 2015, to coordinate a practical approach for the automobile industry in the region.
The final GEAR 2030 Report on the Competitiveness and Sustainable Growth of the Automotive Industry in the European Union, published in 2017, explores the future of the automobile industry in Europe from a broad perspective, which includes: the economy, environmental and societal challenges, trade policies, raw materials, supply chains, amongst other topics. The report’s last section explores automated and connected vehicles (CAVs) from diverse perspectives, including funding, liability, safety, regulation and standards.
On the road to automated mobility: An EU strategy for mobility of the future
Published in 2018 by the European Commission. The document proposes a common European vision for mobility (which includes electric, connected and autonomous vehicles) and establishes actions, funds and initiatives to implement the strategy. After the publication of the strategy, working groups have been established to align the future of mobility with the Trustworthy AI Framework.
Ethics of Connected and Automated Vehicles
In 2020, an independent expert group set up by the European Commission published the report, which provides recommendations to diverse stakeholders (policymakers, manufacturers, deployers and researchers) to enable the inclusion of ethical considerations in CAVs development and regulation. The report explores ethics from the perspective of fundamental and ethical principles laid down in EU Treaties and in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, some of which coincide with the Trustworthy AI Framework (non-maleficence, beneficence, personal autonomy).
